Advert Layout

I BE THE TRIBAL MAN' is TribalMagz's slogan. I chose this as my advert because it stands out.

I have chosen not to use any images because this slogan is self explanatory and it captures the attention of the audience effectively. Below is my analysis of my explanation:

The red 'I' is alarming and indicates its about an individual, however in the video it's not about an individual at all. It's about togetherness and team work, which the girls execute in the video. I'm promoting Funky House as a friendly genre of music which every can get involved in.

Red also links to the video because at the beginning of the video the girls wear their normal school inform and they felt confined and hostile in the class room. When the girls got out of the classroom and went on to the playground wearing their red tops, socks and other red costuming reiterates freedom, energy and most importantly team work. Freedom is presented by their vibrant dance moves and sunny setting. Even though they are individuals together they are creating an image of unison by wearing red.

I BE THE TRIBAL MAN' is the chorus of the song 'Tribal Man Skank's immediately fans of Funky House would know that it is Tribal Magz's new track.

The font is ALL CAPS and bold which stands out and would grasp any reader's attention even if they have no clue about Tribal Magz of his music. Similarly like the bold font the dancers in the videos are also bold because they stand up to the teacher in detention.

'Man' is the bigger font which indicates that the artist is probably a man. However when the audience views the video they'd be surprised that it's girls that are performing in the 'Tribal Man Skank' I've done this is order to change the perception that females are just as good at males when it comes to skanking/dancing because its the males that dominate that scene.

New Media

Word Gets Around on the Underground
'Tribal Man Skank' and the majority of all other UK Funky House products are Underground music. So in order for artists to produce and circulate their music to their target audience the must advertise effectively. Advertising is the best way for UK Funky to become popular as it isn't mainstream at the moment.

Youtube
When 'Tribal Man Skank' was created Tribal Magz uploaded a tutorial video onto Youtube so that Funky House lovers would be up to date with the new tune and (dance) skank. This tutorial not only gives instructions for the new skank but also creates a bond between Tribal Magz and his fans because of the indoor settings and his friendly approach. After uploading the video he copies and pastes the video link to his fan page and other musicians to 'spread the word'.

Facebook
Facebook is the networking site where most Funky House lovers dwell to find out about raves, gigs, comedy shows and frequent updates on the underground life of UK Funky House. Artists put links on their Facebook pages, fan pages and other musicians pages to make their track popular, before they place a price on their track. It is done in this order because a vast majority of the target audience don't want to pay to listen to Funky House tracks. However doesn't hinder the success of artists because they are paid to perform at raves, gigs and comedy shows. Promoters then organise and set up invitations on Facebook, with full information on the location, transport, artists, DJs and the name of the raves.

Facebook Adaptation
I adopted Tribal Magz technique of advertising 'Tribal Man Skank' on Youtube by uploading my music video on to Facebook. I selected a still which I thought would be appealing to my audience and created a note explaining the reason why I uploaded my video and I also asked for positive feedback. I tagged eleven people who I thought fitted my target audience, so that the video would circulate around that network. Out of the eleven people who I tagged into the video nine had selected the 'Like' feature. This tells me that the majority of my selected target audience find my music video appealing. It's meets the standards of a UK FUNKY HOUSE genre.

Deconstructing Myself!!!

As the only female sibling living amongst an older and younger brother, my interests vary from a wide spectrum of things from; athletics, modelling, poetry, football, Motor GP, Eastenders, Waterloo Road, computer/games and mobile phones.

On the sporty side of things, my interest is athletics because I'm a 400m runner. So I tend to engage myself in such areas by reading the news papers, watching the news and looking at videos on YouTube. However my initial interest is expanded by my older brother who loves cars preferably 'Porsche and Mercedes' any vehicle that generates speed and power enough to give him a thrill of his lifetime. He spends hours watching Felipe Massa racing lap by lap without feeling a bit tedious. When I sit with him, he explains the techniques and pure talent of the drivers and the great risks which they take every time they step foot into their fast cars. As an athlete i appreciate that they have to put in massive amounts of training and dedication in order to achieve their goals of being world champions. Which do too so that I can be a top 400m runner.

Where soaps are concerned, my little brother lives within the screen of our huge television. He announces the time at which these soaps begin and end he also makes sure that my eyes are glued to the screen and that I'm deadly silent. I always wonder about his enthusiasm and his undivided attention to these soaps, until he simply explained it to me. His reasons are that his college hours are long and he needs something to amuse him and he fancies on of the young actresses from 'Eastenders'. He said that he also finds it interesting how the media can exaggerate a simple stereo type and make them stand out in situations which they wouldn't mostly.

Technology wise, its a massive competition between the three of us, to see who's got the phone with the best features and who can maintain it longer. It might seem very childish but i love a challenge, especially when i win. The boys don't seem to take care of their phones very well as they always lose them. Keeping up with technology isn't just a competition under neath my roof but also at my 6Th form. I find myself staring, wishing and wanting every new phone i see on the T-Mobile bill boards at the train stations or at the bus stops. Having a high tech phone has made me more aware of the advertisements in the metro. I saw a deal on the new Blackberry which is cheaper that my current price plan. I'm not too amused by that at all.

Modelling and poetry are both things that Ive enjoyed as a young girl and i still do them in my spare time. However my best friend keeps me in form and up to date with gossip and some of her life stories which i write about sometimes. I always get phone calls from her about the latest high heels and the mini dresses which we can both buy to create a scene. Dressing up excites me a lot so I look out for new dresses and shoes on the Internet and sometimes magazines if I'm up for it.

Target Group For Tribal Man Skank

THE FUNKY HOUSE CRAZE!!!
I was doing some more research for my 'Tribal Man Skank albulm cover and I came across this website. This website highlights the popular Funky House tunes. They state the reasons why some songs are popular and why some are not so popular. To my surprise, Tribal Man Skank by Funkin Kofi B isn't up there. However, this site is very useful as it demonstrates, the vibe of young people and their interest in these songs and dances.

Who are they and where are they from?
Teenage boys and girls, who listen to Underground sounds and beats, have had a hard week of intense studying and exmas enjoy the raving scene. They like dancing and learning new and versatile dance moves (choreography), they are one of my target groups. These teenaged boys and girls are grouped respectedly; 13-17 , these teenagers can be found at family gatherings or a friend's house party or rented hall party. Teenagers from the ages of 18-19 can typically be found is a club in the well known West London, East London, South West London and North London which isn't as popular as the rest. As a notable amount of the top list Funky House artists are Afircans, their fans, my tartget group are also African. However due to the high enery and good vibes Caribbeans, Asians, Europeans and Somalians are also taking part and listening to Funky House right here in the UK.
My target group are under great peer pressure from their peer-groups as it is essential to know the lyrics of the song and most importantly the dance moves. Knowing the dance moves creates a great feeling of belonging to for my target group as they dance (skank) in unison. It is special and exclusive to Funky House lovers as it isn't mainstream.

If Funky House isn't Mainstream how does the craze circulate?

As Funky House is rated as underground music, it is circulated through word of mouth, handing out flyers, invitation on the favourite Facebook. Facebook is one of the fastest-growing and best-known sites for socialising on the Internet today. Promoters would organise events: raves, gigs and house parties which will include the details of the where abouts of the event. How to get there and most importantly the popular Fukny House artists.

Preparation for Cd covers!

I've been looking at various Cd covers by a wide range of artists. Ive noticed that the ceses are all one general size (5''x 5.5''). The front cover generally has the title of the track and the name of the artist. The inner covers are different based on the genre of music, the artists ideas and the title of the album. I have also realised that the back cover is used mainly for the tracks on the disk.
The layout of Cd covers are all deliberatlely setup to capture a specific audience. For example the Klye Monogue's 'FEVER' Cd case is quite simple; it's white with a little signature of hers. If she wasn't a famous artist she would'nt be able to affort to make her case so simple because it would not stand out and almost boring.

For the first inner cover of my Cd case I will use a plain black background and create a photo montage of the dancers. Beneath this I will have in a bright and colourful font SKANK, DANCE, BUBBLE!!! I have chosen these words because they are some of the lyrics of the track and it also emphasizes what the FUNKY theme is all about.

This is an example of a digi pack which has inspired me.

My Album Cover

I will use the bold and red font that the album cover above has used because it is bright and stands out. The red font will make the perfect link to the dancers costumes in my music video 'Tribal Man Skank'. I like the way in which the entire album has been composed, the front cover has a photograph of men in black and white. This links to the white font of the text on the black background of one of the inner covers. The red font on the front cover also links to the middle cover.

When i'm creating my album cover I will use the colours, red and white for my fonts becuase I've used the same colours in my music video. When advertising my product my target group 'teenage boys and girls' will be able to establish that the UK Funky House genre.

Funky House Album Covers

I think that this album cover would be appealing to the UK Funk House genre because it colourful, the neon pink swirls and splashes of purple symbolises the fun and the wild side. The font is ALL CAPS, bold and it stands out. This album cover shouts out 'FUNKY HOUSE'!!! The editing of the album cover places the scene of a rave/party. The medium shot of the woman is placed in the centre and it capture the woman's make up, big hoops, her red sequin dress and sparkly creating the disco light effect. Her body is outlined with neon pink lines and smudges, this oozes energy and hype. The album cover states the type of music 'FUNKY HOUSE',

I think that this album cover is fresh for the fact that it has a white background. Even though it has a medium close up show of a young woman in action the album is quite boring. There is very little editing done to this album cover compared to the the previous cover. However the bright blue font which is ALL CAPS, stands out because it is placed in the centre of the cover similarly to the 1st album cover which I looked at. I also noticed that there is an orange box at the bottom of the album cover. This caught my eye immediately because it contrasts with white and the bright blue of the central font.

This album cover doesn't contain many colours but the blend of colours: purple, white and orange are quite vibrant and contrast well with each other. The font is purple, rounded and bubbly. This font will attract UK Funky house listeners because the font is exciting. The young woman is wearing a silver sequin dress which like the 1st album cover creates the disco ball effect and the night life in clubs. The background had been edited with brushes possibly from Photoshop, so I think I will also use Photoshop to design my album cover also because I can get creative with the colours, fonts and brushes. There's a puple and white (click---> "Ministry of Sound") logo which is placed on the right side of the young woman, this is a good way to get the attention of UK Funky House target group because Ministry of Sound promotes and "spread the dance music gospel around the world".

Now that I've looked at three album covers I've noticed a trend in the covers that I've analysed so far; they all have a centered medium shot of a beautiful young woman, in the party gesture and smiling. I think this will be appealing to young guys aged 15 and onwards because the women are pretty to look at and it would be the first thing they see. This would be good advertisement because it is the opposite sex.

I think this album cover would be the most appealing for album cover because the black background contrasts with the bright pink and white fancy font, the silver disco ball and the bright and luminous pink specks of light. The sequin look is prevalent amongst the four album covers that I have analysed so far. Notice: The disco ball enhances the Ministry of Sound's logo which my target will find appealing because they know that this logo represents the best in UK Funky House. The logo is also edited with orange, yellow and pink and black. which is a fantastic contrast. The editing for this cover is quite simple but very effective because it is strikingly bright and colourful. The light around the disco ball symbolises the night life in clubs.

Album Cover Research!

An album cover is the front of the packaging of a commercially-released audio recording product, or album. The term can refer to either the printed cardboard covers typically used to package sets of 10" and 12" 78 rpm records, single and sets of 12" LPs, sets of 45 rpm records (either in several connected sleeves or a box), or the front-facing panel of a CD package, and, increasingly, the primary image accompanying a digital download of the album, or of its individual tracks.

The cover serves 3 main purposes:

To advertise the contents of the music product.
To convey the artistic aspirations of the original artists ( Alex Steinweiss' Cover Art).
In reproductions of the artwork, to serve as a primary image in the promotional efforts surrounding the product, as an identifiable image associated with it.
Also, in the case of all types of records, it also serves as part of the protective sleeve.

In today's lesson I've been surfing the web in search of potential designs for 'Tribal Man Skank'. So far I've noticed that the genre 'Funky House' isn't mainstream but it is popular in underground music and therefore its difficult for me to find design. However I've found blog posts similar to mine with albums covers and designs. Even though there aren't many album covers that i think i can relate to Ive found many promotional flyers which are very colourful which depict the 'Funky House' theme.

High School Musicals

I've been doing some research on up beat high school musicals and Ive come across three videos:

Lip Gloss- Lil Mama (click here)

High School Musical 1 and 2 (click here)

These videos are all set in a school with routine dances, except HSM 3.

What I like about these videos is that they all relate to the theme song! They are filmed within the hall way, gym and playground. I will be filming my video in a class room and the main action will be on the playground where the routine dances would be happening. In the High School Musical video, the red theme is kept very consistent. Red links to the basketball theme, I will consider adopting this technique in my media product also.

However on the contrary to the videos I've been looking at, my music video isn't going to relate to the theme of the song. Tribal Man is raving song but I'll be capturing it in school. So the costumes will be school uniforms and the main dancers/characters will be wearing (red, blue and white) tops. I've chosen to do this so that the audience would be able to distinguish the difference.

Analysis
Tribal Magz' lyrics are not standard English "I BE THE TRIBAL MAN". This use of non standard English signifies to the audience that he 'Tribal Magz' is one of them. One of them, being the target group 'Teenagers'. The lyrics give the target audience I sense of identification because it is exclusive,"I BE THE TRIBAL MAN" is also the dancing instructions for the video and the raves. Tribal Magz is of an African decent, he uses a Ghanaian pathos in his lyrics which other African countries such as Sierra Lean and Nigeria can also relate to . Even though it can be argued that Funk House attacks more Africans because of the rhythm, drums and dances which are uses to compose the music it also attracts Caribbeans, Whites, Asians and Portuguese teenagers in London also.

Tribal Man Skank Animatic

I drew up simple ideas for my music video, stick men and detailed facial features including actions that will be executed and directions also. I create an animatic so that I will be able to have a visual idea of what shot would be appropriate and more affective in order to make my music video a success. So far so good the animatic syncs perfectly with the sound track. I now need to film the video.

What makes a good music video?

A music video is a motion picture produced to accompany a song, frequently for promotional purposes. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings.

I think originality (thinking outside the box) makes a good music video.
In terms of promotional purposes, the video must firstly capture and engage the audience then convey their message be it direct or indirect. The audience is the most important aspect of a music video as it is being direct to them. 'Thriller' title's font stands out because it is red, the letters looks like daggers as the edges are sharp and the font is bold.

My definition of a good music video which is very successful, is 'Thriller'.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9DEkFWt3ig .The reason for my choice is that I watched it at the age of 10 and I still remember it to this day. When I watched Thriller, it immediately drew me in because Michael Jackson was in the video and he had a cheeky yet creepy look on his face as he watched the film in the cinema. The title 'Thriller' is also captured me as the font was red and creepy looking.

It can be argued that 'Thriller' is a good music video due to the recent death of Michael Jackson. However, 'Thriller' has been imitated many times before his death because people like a lot. The dance moves are catchy and the song is simply scary. The video depicts the title very well by the costumes, make up and special effects used to create tension and a thrill.

Research on Tribal Magz (Interview)

The single’s called Tribal Man Skank. Where did the name come from?

It actually came from Ras Kwame! I sent him the track but forgot to put the name on it, so when he first played it on BBC 1Xtra he actually made the name up. I saw him at an event after and went over and introduced myself and thanked him for naming my track!

Did the huge underground success for acts like K.I.G Family with Head, Shoulders, Kneez & Toez and Gracious K with Migraine Skank, inspire you to write Tribal Man Skank?

My cousin, Gracious K sent me the Migraine Skank and when I saw how that blew up it just inspired me to do something similar.

Your raise to fame came off the back of YouTube with hundreds and thousands of views for the Tribal Man Skank video. How does it feel to do PAs and watch the crowd singing and dancing along to your song?

Ahh it’s mad! At the first few performances when everyone was singing and dancing along it was madness.
The entire interview can be viewed on this link.

Mood Board- ‘Tribal Man’

The first thought that comes to my mind when I hear the track’s title ‘Tribal Man’ is; native people, doing their ritual dances in a congregation harmonously. I love group dancing because it promotes team work! I’m going to need good team work in order to create a sucessful video.

The fisrt 6 seconds of ‘Tribal Man’ sirens are herd. Immediately this tracks grasps your attention because it is alarming! It some whats creates an adrenaline rush, as I can imagine bright lights and police rushing by. They make everyone feel uneasy.

I chose this image for my mood board because I find it very interesting. The men are dancing (skanking- doing the funky dance move) in synch but their trousers have different patterns. It is interesting to me as the bright colours and patterns of the men’s trousers symbolise culture (tribal/funky), vibes and individuality yet unison.

I chose this graphic design particularly because it’s self explanatory. It’s telling the public (funky lovers) that a new funky beat is in town! The bright colours of the text represent the funky theme! The font is All CAPS...it stands out and sends the message directly.

This photograph is by far my favourite choice because it’s linked directly to the title of the track ‘Tribal Man’. It displays diversity of culture and race. It shows that anybody can listen to ‘Tribal Man’. Like the first picture it promotes team work, showing the cultures dancing and celebrating in unison.

As simple and plain as this pendant might seem, it represents what the ‘Tribal Man’ dance is all about. Firstly the circular shape of the pendant signifies the circle in which Funky dancers (skankers) dance in. The different dance moves imprinted onto it shows that the dance can be versatile and creative. Hence what I intend to do with my video; make it versatile and creative, at the same time promoting unison and most importantly ‘Team Work’.

Facebook e-mail sent to Tribal Magz.

This is the e-mail which I sent to Tribal Magz asking for his permission to use his track. His reply was positive.

I'm a student at La Retraite Sixth Form. I'm sending you this message as I have to create a music video which contribes to a percentage of my course work in my Media A2 Course.

I love and enjoy your track 'Tribal Skank' a lot and think it would be the best track for the video because it's up beat, cathcy and by far one of the best Funky Tunes out this year! I'm fully aware of the copyright law and it's consequences, so i'm asking your permission to use 'Tribal Skank'.

Message me back if it's possible or not for me to use ' Tribal Skank' for my course work.

Music Video Preparation!!!

I've just listened to a variety of tracks and I have made a decision. I've chosen 'Tribal Man Skank' by Funkin Kofi B, it's a UK Funky House tune which is the one of the most popular genres at the moment amongst us teenagers. The track is very upbeat and catchy, I can imagine me skanking (dancing) to it!!!

What is UK Funky?
According to Wikipedia "UK Funky (sometimes known as Funky) is a genre of electronic dance music from the United Kingdom that is heavily influenced by UK Garage, electro house, broken beat, soca music, and afrobeat. Typically, UK Funky blends beats, bass loops and synths with Latin percussion and contemporary R&B-style vocals at around 135 beats per minute.

Emerging in the late-2000s, UK Funky has been described by The Guardian as "probably the most exciting development in UK music since garage became grime".

I will be contacting Funkin Kofi B to get the lyrics of 'Tribal Man Skank' and the track itself.

Music and Copyright homework questions (Miss Hiltunen)

What are some of the arguments for and against copyrighting music?

The primary purpose of the copyright law is not so much to protect the interests of the creators, but rather to promote the progress of science and the useful arts—that is—knowledge. To accomplish this purpose, copyright ownership encourages authors/creators in their efforts by granting them a temporary monopoly, or ownership of exclusive rights for a specified length of time.

However, this monopoly is somewhat limited when it conflicts with an overriding public interest, such as encouraging new creative and intellectual works, or the necessity for some members of the public to make a single copy of a work for non profit, educational purposes.

I see the copyright law as a positive impact because it executes punishments for illegally downloading music. For example, RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) is cracking down on campuses. Sarah Barg, a sophomore at University of Nebraska, had to pay a 3,000 dollar settlement for downloading 381 songs or face being sued. She is one of 61 students at Nebraska caught, but there are more than 60 other colleges across the country that have students being sued. This new aggressive policy towards illegally downloading music is taking aim at college students to stem the ingrained habits of downloading and sharing music on campus. Making an example of a few and frightening the rest, these scare tactics are yet to be proven effective but most likely have stemmed those caught from illegally acquiring music on-line.

On the other hand the scale at which people (preferably students) are downloading music which has been copyrighted is very wide. Technology is advancing everyday, making it more difficult for perpetrators to be punished. Even though creators want their work to be protected it's only for a certain amount of time. Also, if someone purchases a book or CD it becomes their property and therefore have the authority to lend or share their material.

The Go! Team AIR RAIDER (Mood Board)

I have chosen this image because I think it represents the opening sound effects of an air raid. In my imagination I visualise brave pilots in aeroplanes loaded with ammo, flying across their enemies’ front line! Very militant!!!

I've decided to choose this image of women in different colourful outfits as it highlights the upbeat music which played soon after the opening effects of the air raid. Like their outfits, these ladies will be full of energy and dancing. A perfect similarity!!!
